about

"Evolving from the confines of a solo project into an emotionally reaching five piece powerhouse, Juan de Fuca renders heavy dreams through the catacombs of their beautifully textured debut album Solve/Resolve. Shortly after singer/songwriter Jack Cherry released a 6 song solo EP cavern of in 2015, he was fervently encouraged by friends in the Athens, GA scene to make something bigger happen with his material. Bassist Jack Webster and drummer Howard Stewart pushed for the formation of a full band, and when guitarists Clark Brown and Declan Farisee signed on, the group began work in earnest developing a sound that drew as much on Shoegaze’s layers of blissful chaos as it did on the clenched-jaw melodicism of wiry early aughts post-punk and Lower East Side rock icons.

The group worked with engineer and producer Drew Vandenberg (Mothers, Toro y Moi, Futurebirds) at Chase Park Transduction, channeling the intimacy of early demos into a wide-spectrum sound. Across the album’s ten succinct tracks, Juan de Fuca explores themes of struggle, nihilism, loss and redemption, watching these troubled feelings fighting to be heard through waves of beautiful noise. From the first moments of the album, dense emotional currents are felt as vividly as the strength of hook-heavy narcotic dreampop arrangements. Uptempo burner “Song 4” narrates cautiously against the dangers of seeking comfort in excess while the band is in full bore Room on Fire mode while “Instructional Video” calls out from deep isolation, blurring plaintive acoustic guitars into a sadness that feels almost hopeful in how steadfast it is. Cherry’s sneering croon and the pinpoint precision of the songs recall both the electric early output of the Strokes or the Walkmen as well as the distant haziness of Deerhunter. Over the course of the Solve/Resolve, ambient pop repeatedly crashes headlong into dire, unrepentant rock and when it’s finished, the room feels noticeably changed, as if we’ve all been through something and the air itself is different because of it."
